Good Afternoon! This is your captain speaking. Welcome Aboard! I would love to introduce myself to you before we begin take off. I have been married to my sweet husband, John, for 18 years. We have two sons who love all things fishing and football. Hendon is 16 and a junior at Northside High School, and Graham is 14 and beginning his freshman year at Northside. Mrs. Bray is my sister, and I am beyond excited to teach with her again. My family means the world to me!
I have been teaching for 18 years and have had many exciting experiences. I have a Bachelors Degree in Middle School Math and Science Education. My certificate also contains ELA certification, Reading certification, and a Gifted In Field endorsement. I had the honor of being Midland Middle School's Teacher of the Year in 2010 and was also among the top ten Teachers of the Year for Muscogee County. This gave me the opportunity to apply and receive a Harvard Teacher Fellowship. Being on the campus of Harvard University and meeting Howard Gardner was an unbelievable experience! Opening Aaron Cohn Middle School and developing their gifted program was another awesome experience. Serving Aaron Cohn as the gifted facilitator opened the door to be able to serve at the district level as a Regional Gifted Facilitator. I realized, however, that I missed everything about serving as a classroom teacher and decided to follow my heart right back into the classroom.
About Mrs. Seegar

I still can’t get over the looks on peoples face when I tell them I am a 5th grade science teacher. They look at me as if I had just told them I walk over hot coals while eating glass for a living. The wince on their faces begin to fade as I explain to them just how lucky I am to walk into room 14 at Britt David Magnet Academy each day. For 180 days each year, I get the opportunity to build relationships with kids and help them see the awesome potential they possess.
Teachers are leaders within their classroom. Throughout the past 18 years in the classroom, I have noticed the leadership style that works best for my students is relational leadership. John Maxwell said it best when he said, “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” If I stood in front of the room each day just spouting off everything I know about science, most kids would tune me out. I must first work on building meaningful relationships with each one of my kids. I have to get to know them and what makes them tick. Once they know they can trust me and know that I care for them, they begin to smile when they walk into the room. They will work hard even in the face of adversity.
One of my favorite aspects of teaching is creating engaging lessons for my students. It is a constant challenge to find new and exciting ways to deliver and practice the rigorous content of the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Science and meet the unique needs of each learner. I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to teach science! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, and believe students learn it best using a hands on approach. Pilots don't train for their jobs using worksheets. They get hands on experience using simulations and live flight time. Your children deserve the same! All students deserve the opportunity to become a scientist, and it is my job to provide them with experiences to equip them to do just that!
I can’t think of a career any more challenging or rewarding than that of a 5th grade teacher. What works today might not work tomorrow. Who a student is today might not be who they are tomorrow, but each and every day I have the chance to allow my love of learning to radiate throughout my classroom and into the hearts and minds of my students.
